I Used to Think Green was the Wrong Kind of Green, but in Reality, it was Browner Than I Thought.

Let me tell you what the “Green” movement looked like to me before I talked to Adrianna Quintero, Senior Litigator and Director of La Onda Verde at the National Resources Defense Council.

It looked like a black Cadillac Escalade. The new hybrid version, of course. You know the one. It looks just like a normal Escalade, only it has that cool little green “hybrid” logo that tells people “Hey, I’m wealthy enough to drive this SUV, but I’m cool, too, because I care about the planet. This logo validates my greenness.”

Green looked like a freaking blue chicken nugget on wheels, making me nervous as hell to pass it on the freeway in fear of causing a cross-wind that would blow it into oblivion and committing vehicular manslaughter. They’re called SmartCars, right?

No Dogs were Hurt in the Writing of this Column.

Michael vick

On Sunday in Atlanta, NFL quarterback Michael Vick took the field against his former team, the Atlanta Falcons.  Once the highest paid player in the sport and the face of a franchise, Vick is now a back-up limited to a few plays a game.  Many of his former fans booed him as he jogged onto the artificial turf of the Georgia Dome for the first time since serving a two-year prison sentence for running a dog-fighting operation while the Falcons’ franchise player.  By the second half, they were cheering him as he launched a fifty-yard scoring bomb.  They decided they were ready to forgive.  Vick basked in the applause of the crowd.

Meanwhile, Tiger Woods licked his wounds in private, refusing still to speak publicly about his numerous infidelities.  And not really asking for our forgiveness.

At least not to our satisfaction.

Empathy Vital Not Only to Helping Others, but Also to Helping Ourselves.

hands

How many times has somebody genuinely wanted to help you with a situation, but because they weren’t members of the same social class you dismissed them by saying something along the lines of, “How can you truly care? You don’t understand what it’s like to be (insert identity here)?” Or maybe you said, “You’ve never had to (insert struggle here).” I too am guilty of misinterpreting a person’s willingness to help as a showcase of condescendence in my past.  And, I too, was wrong.

Yes it’s true that unless you have experienced the exact same events, exact same reactions, and exact same outcomes, you can’t truly understand exactly how somebody feels. However, one of human beings’ greatest accomplishments is the ability to empathize. It doesn’t take the exact same experiences to empathize with someone. Not everybody has genial intentions all the time, but simply having a different background does not necessarily make a person insensitive to others’ concerns.

For the People: A Few Words on Redemption.

iverson

When I’m not trying to shame our elected officials and less-informed citizens into better behavior, I follow the NBA with great intensity.  I don’t care one bit for any other sport, and I pay no attention to any other league. I even write about the NBA for a website of my own when time permits.  I tend to think about the game of professional basketball the same way I think about a lot of things: in story lines.  I think about the legends and the undercurrent of sports mythology that shape conversations about the game. I consider the legacies of men that will endure beyond the short years they are strong enough to wear the uniform.  Coming into this season, my mind was most occupied with the story of Allen Iverson, a mercurial and talented guard who, in the twilight of his professional career, was looking for a home, a job, and a chance to contend.

Iverson spent the first decade of his career with the Philadelphia 76ers, and once carried the team all the way to the NBA Finals, but Philly was stopped by the Los Angeles Lakers and their superstar tandem of Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal.  During his time with the ‘Sixers, the ten-time All-Star was frequently lauded for his exceptional talent, and just as frequently criticized for his selfish attitude and off-court behavior.  Things ended badly for Iverson in Philadelphia.  After numerous incidents of clashing with management, he was asked not to show up for games, and shortly thereafter was traded to the Denver Nuggets.  In Denver, Iverson and the team both did well but fell short of championship aspirations.  Early into his third season as a Nugget, Denver accepted a trade from the Pistons that sent Iverson to Detroit.  The trade proved positive for the Denver Nuggets but less so for the Pistons, and ruinous for Allen Iverson.  Detroit’s team was poorly suited to accommodate the Iverson dynamic, to say nothing of the Iverson ego.  Because of his unwillingness to accept a secondary or diminished role on the court, the Pistons eventually asked the player to stay home rather than show up to work, making it the second time Allen Iverson was effectively fired from the NBA.
